As an unalloyed low carbon steel grade S420NL/NL1 is supplied in the hot rolled and cold drawn conditions. The S420N steel specifications are high yield non alloy steels. First specified in the European EN10025 standard and later published by the British Standards Institute (BSI). These standards superseded the BS4360 grades. The average minimum yield for this material is 355 N/mm², hence the name S420NL/NL1(with the 'S' giving reference to it being a structural steel).
Grade S420NL/NL1 stainless steel is a high-carbon steel with a minimum chromium content of 12%. Like any other stainless steel, grade S420NL/NL1 can also be hardened through heat treatment. It offers good ductility in its annealed state and excellent corrosion resistance properties when the metal is polished, surface grounded or hardened. This grade has the highest hardness - 50HRC - among all the stainless steel grades with 12% chromium.
Stainless steel grades that are similar to grade S420NL/NL1 stainless steels include martensitic steels such as the other versions of grade S420NL/NL1, having vanadium, sulphur and molybdenum in their composition, and the grade 440 series. Non-standard grade 420C has carbon content that is little higher than that of grade S420NL/NL1.
Using high yield deformed bar, with increased in yield strength allows engineers to use steel that is 1/2 or 1/3 the thickness and weight to do the same job. By switching to high yield, you have substantially reduced the weight of your product, which make transportation easier. In addition, the strength of bonds of deformed bars calculated should be 40% to 80% higher than that of plain round bars of same nominal size. High yield deformed bar is able to deflect more than mild steel before breaking but both materials deflect the same amount with respect to a given load.
